In a move to combat environmental degradation, Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has instructed the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to take immediate action against companies polluting the Nairobi River. This directive marks Duale’s first major order since assuming his role in the Environment Ministry.
“NEMA Restoration Orders must be obeyed by the regulated community,” Duale stated firmly, emphasizing the need for compliance from all polluters. He directed NEMA to initiate enforcement actions against all facilities discharging waste into the Nairobi Rivers Basin ecosystem without delay.
NEMA Director General Mamo B. Mamo confirmed the directive, revealing that he has given the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company a 24-hour deadline to repair a manhole that has been discharging effluent into the river. “We will map out all effluent discharge points along the Nairobi Rivers ecosystem for immediate action,” Mamo added.
The areas affected include City Park, Kenyatta National Hospital, and the Kirichwa Kubwa area, where pollution levels have raised significant concerns.
This latest order follows a previous initiative in February when NEMA directed 29 companies to clean up the river after inspections revealed synthetic waste linked to well-known brands. “Action will be taken against any polluter, including prosecution for non-compliance,” Mamo warned, signaling a tough stance on environmental protection. The community is urged to cooperate in restoring the health of the Nairobi River.
