President Ruto’s government oversaw the registration of more than 49,000 new teachers in the 2022/2023 academic year, addressing the growing demand for educators in the country.

TSC in its 2022/2023 annual report said a total of 49,185 new teachers were registered in the period.

Of this number, 23,230 were degree holders while 2,371 were diploma holders. The Commission also registered 10,500 for Primary Teacher Education (PTE) who were certificate holders.

“13,084 were Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) certificate holders,” the Commission said.

The TSC Act 2012 Article 237, requires the commission to register all qualified teachers before they can teach in any public or private institution.

A teacher who meets the requirements for registration is usually issued with the certificate of Registration bearing a TSC number within 30 days.

Further, TSC recruited 15,000 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms and engaged 26,000 intern teachers, the highest number ever recruited and engaged.

“This was aimed at achieving 100 per cent transition from primary to secondary, implementation of CBC and addressing the existing teacher shortage,” the Commission said.

The Commission also provided opportunities for career growth and promoted 11,231 teachers through competitive selection and 11,069 through common cadre establishments.
