The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell Fontelles, has reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to bolstering Kenya’s peacekeeping missions during a meeting with President William Ruto.

Fontelles’ announcement comes as a pivotal endorsement of Kenya’s proactive stance in promoting peace across the African continent and globally.

“We discussed shared challenges from Ukraine to Gaza, reaffirming the EU’s unwavering support for Kenya’s peace missions,” stated Fontelles after the meeting held on the sidelines of the Peace Summit in Switzerland.

President Ruto’s impassioned plea to the EU in November 2023 to back Kenya’s initiatives, particularly in Haiti, has now borne fruit with the EU’s pledge of support.

Ruto emphasized, “The EU’s support is vital in empowering our efforts, ensuring we have the necessary resources and backing to drive lasting peace initiatives.”

Kenya’s active role under President Ruto’s leadership in resolving conflicts in East and Central Africa has garnered international recognition. The EU’s commitment marks a turning point in Kenya’s peacekeeping endeavors, providing a crucial boost to its diplomatic and humanitarian initiatives in war-torn regions.
