The second phase of the farmers’ registration is currently on going. This is an exercise conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture with the government and the local leadership. Registration of farmers is a process that has two very important purposes.

  1. To have the exact number of farmers in the country.
  2. To understand the capacities of farmers in the country.

This will enable the government to make data driven decisions in regards to farmers. The government will be able to give better services to the Kenyan farmers with ease. Enrollment into extension services such as the one conducted by KARLO will be easier and more efficient.

The government is also conducting this registration to ease the disbursement of vital products such as the subsidized fertilizer, inputs and seeds such as the planned delivery of cashew nuts seeds to Kilifi farmers by the Ministry.

Registration of farmers will go a long way to eliminating corruption in the issuance of government inputs, thereby increasing transparency in the sector. It will also bridge the communication gap between the farmers and the ministry and agricultural state departments. In the impending El Nino, the government will be able to disperse information to farmers in real time.

Ministry of Agriculture has urged farmers to give accurate information on their farming and agricultural practices. Farmers have been asked to cooperate with the agents who will be visiting them in their farms as the process continues. The Ministry has reiterated the importance of the exercise to the farmers.
