The government has announced an investment of Sh218 million for the construction of 218 Grade 9 classrooms across Nyeri County, aimed at supporting the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum. This initiative is part of a larger plan to build 18,000 classrooms nationwide to accommodate the projected 1.3 million learners transitioning from Grade 8 to Grade 9 in January 2025.

Nyeri County Director of Education, Jane Njogu, revealed that the construction will occur in two phases. “In the first phase, we are building 66 classrooms across 37 schools, and we are currently at 52 percent completion,” Njogu stated. “Schools like Chaka Primary have already reached the roofing stage, and I am confident we will complete this project ahead of schedule.”

The selection of schools for the new classrooms was based on student enrollment, with each institution receiving allocations proportional to its student population. “Single-stream schools will receive one classroom, while those with multiple streams will get more based on their enrollment,” explained Njogu.

Additionally, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba confirmed nationwide progress, stating that the ministry is currently working on 3,500 classrooms and will disburse Sh7.5 billion for further construction.

“We are committed to ensuring that every learner has access to a conducive learning environment,” Ogamba emphasized. The continued support and timely funding are vital for these infrastructure projects, essential for meeting the needs of the increasing student population.
