In response to escalating banditry attacks in Isiolo, Meru, Laikipia, and Samburu counties, the government has set up a new command center.

Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome, stated, “The recent surge in violence has resulted in tragic losses and widespread displacement in the region.”

The newly established command centre will focus on these areas, complementing the existing efforts in Baringo and neighboring counties. Sophisticated equipment and Formed Police Units have been deployed in hotspots like Loruk and Mukogodo as part of Operation Maliza Uhalifu North Rift. Military support and National Police Reservists have been mobilized, with additional camps strategically positioned.

Last year, a state of emergency was declared in six counties due to rampant banditry, prompting a multi-agency response to address the crisis. Despite progress made, recent attacks in Baringo, Isiolo, and Meru have reignited concerns, leading to renewed efforts to combat banditry and cattle rustling.

On Saturday, March 30, 2024, President William Ruto called an emergency meeting with key security officials in the state house to address the escalating security issues in the North Rift area, which resulted in him reaffirming the government’s commitment to restoring peace in the North Rift region and beyond.
