Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has issued a plea to hospitals across the country, urging them not to turn away patients holding NHIF cards.

This urgent call comes as the nation prepares for the transition to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF). Speaking before Senators on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, Nakhumicha assured healthcare facilities that outstanding debts will be settled promptly once funds are released by the National Treasury.

Nakhumicha emphasized, “I want to assure facilities that there is no cause and they do not need to disrupt services. Once they have provided services, their claims have been verified and reconciled, they are going to be paid.” The government is set to release Sh8.5 billion this week to address the mounting bills owed to hospitals.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by hospitals due to delayed payments, Nakhumicha reiterated, “We have had a delay of the exchequer which has given rise to the many huge bills being experienced across the country. We have received confirmation from the Treasury that the funds will be released this week.”
