Enrollment is surging in schools across Baringo County, Kenya, as improvements in peace and security take hold, according to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

Many learners who previously abandoned their studies due to rampant banditry are now returning thanks to the concerted efforts of a multi-agency team and renovation initiatives led by the KDF through Operation Maliza Uhalifu (OMU).

Schools such as Arabal, Kapindasum, Mukutani, Chemoril, and Chesitet are witnessing a steady rise in student numbers, signaling a return to normalcy in the community. Joel Kipkwony, headteacher of Arabal Primary, shared, “Students from both Baringo and Laikipia counties are enrolling and studying together harmoniously.”

Arabal Assistant Chief Emily Kimoi praised the security improvements, stating that numerous community members have returned to their daily activities after being displaced.

John Rutto, headmaster of Chemoril Won Primary School, highlighted the positive impact of the newfound peace, mentioning that learners from far-flung areas like Paka are now enrolling without fear of attacks.

Sheila Cherito, headteacher of Chesitet Primary, added that access to medical care and food has made a significant difference in enrollment rates. “KDF has been supportive, especially with medical assistance and food donations,” she noted while urging the government to maintain the school feeding program, which she believes plays a critical role in keeping children in school.

The collaborative efforts are transforming the educational landscape in Baringo County and restoring hope in the community.
