The Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) has spearheaded a nationwide initiative to promote renewable energy technologies in the country.
The corporation has established 16 energy centers across the country, showcasing a variety of renewable energy sources and serving as vital training hubs for local communities.
Rose Mkalama, CEO of REREC, highlighted the significance of these energy centers, stating, “The energy centers are critical training and demonstration hubs for our communities to adopt renewable energy sources.” This move comes as part of REREC’s expanded mandate to lead Kenya’s green energy drive and implement rural electrification projects.
Recent data from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority revealed that an impressive 86% of Kenya’s electricity is now generated from renewable sources such as geothermal, hydroelectric, wind, and solar energy. The government plans to establish an additional 31 energy centers in counties lacking access to these resources.
This strategic shift towards renewable energy sources marks a significant step forward in Kenya’s clean energy transition, aiming to provide sustainable energy solutions for all while reducing environmental impact.
