The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has revealed significant progress in the investigation into the shooting of Mediamax journalist Catherine Wanjeri. IPOA Assistant Director Josphat Kaimenyi announced that the investigation is now 80% complete and efforts are underway to swiftly finalize the remaining aspects.
“I want to assure Kenyans and members of the press that we are on top of issues concerning the investigations into the harm that Wanjeri underwent,” Kaimenyi stated, extending wishes for a swift recovery to the ailing journalist.
Speaking outside IPOA offices in Nakuru, Kaimenyi noted that only a few documents from the police remain outstanding. “We are finalizing on investigations and have received the P3 form. We are also following up with other governmental institutions, like the police, to fast-track the necessary documents for our investigations,” he explained.
Catherine Wanjeri, who was shot while covering a public demonstration on July 16, expressed hope in IPOA’s efforts. “I am hopeful that with the speed they have gathered information, they will provide the justice that we require for me and other journalists,” she remarked.
The shooting, which sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability from various media houses and human rights organizations, has led to protests in Nakuru. Journalists marched to the Central Police Station demanding justice for Wanjeri, with many carrying banners in solidarity. The Kenya Union of Journalists has also condemned the shooting, calling for accountability.
