President Ruto’s government has set sights on the transformation of the Dairy and Livestock sector into a viable economic activity. The government recognizes the sub-sector as an important pillar of the BETA plan, seeking to take the necessary measures to improve it.
Speaking in Garissa on the sensitization field day organized by the Kenya Dairy Board, PS Jonathan Mueke reiterated the government’s commitment in continuing to create an enabling environment for the country’s livestock farmers, the continued assistance with market linkages for the country’s animals, with the aim of increasing the earnings of livestock farmers.
The sensitization field day was held with the aim of training the livestock farmers on how to keep livestock of quality and quantity that aligns with market demand.
PS Mueke also remarked that the government’s efforts and mechanisms geared towards maintaining high levels of animal health are a top priority.
In perfect partnership with the counties’ veterinary services, President Ruto’s government has developed a technological surveillance early warning protection system capable of detecting any disease outbreak in any corner of the country. This attributed to the successful containment of the Rift Valley Fever that resulted from the heavy El Nino Rains in late 2023.
The State Department for Livestock Development is currently working in close partnership with county governments regarding disease control, implementing a vaccination exercise in 20 counties.
