The older population, especially those without the cushion of pensions that civil servants enjoy, is a vulnerable group of people who the government has made a commitment to protect. Together with people living with severe disabilities and orphans, the government is currently carrying out a registration exercise.
When the Kenya Kwanza government took over power, the government found a more neglected elderly population with delays of up to 8 months for their monthly stipend.
Since taking over, the President has seen to it that all arrears have been cleared, with the months of July and August seeing the elderly receive their stipend as early as the 30th of the month. As the Deputy stated at his recent interview with Inooro TV, the government has promised to ensure there will be no more delays with these stipend for the entirety of their governance.
At the moment there are 1,042,376 beneficiaries enrolled in the Inua Jamii program. The government plans to bring the number to 2.5 Million. This registration will give the government the data needed to make future plans and appropriate allocations, ensuring more vulnerable Kenyans are protected from poverty and its impacts.
CS Florence Bore has assured Kenyans of the commitment of the President and her Ministry to ensure that the process is swift and reaffirmed the commitment of the Government in ensuring cushioning of the elderly and the vulnerable remains a priority.
Social Protection involves shielding the vulnerable in the community with the aim of improving their livelihood.
The monthly stipend issued by the government fulfils a purpose or two;
- The Commitment to Take Care of all Kenyans.
As stated by the Deputy President, the Kenya Kwanza government is one built on service to the people. The President in the last one year has demonstrated a commitment to bettering the lives of all Kenyans. A country that protects its most vulnerable population is a country that grows.
- Transparency.
This exercise will increase transparency and seamless transfer of funds to the needy in the country.
- Planning.
As the President has stated on many occasions, the Kenya Kwanza government is a data driven government. A government that makes development and decisions based on data. To reduce wastage of resources and serve Kenyans much better.
