President William Ruto announced on Sunday, January 14, that Kenya has received a substantial donation of 16,000 tonnes of Urea 46 fertilizer from the government of Algeria The donation is part of Algeria’s development aid agenda for African countries and will play a critical role in helping Kenya’s subsidized fertilizer program.
President Ruto expressed his gratitude for the donation, stating, “This generous contribution of fertiliser from Algeria will greatly benefit our farmers and help improve agricultural productivity across the country.”
The Urea 46 fertiliser is an essential component for enhancing land fertility and increasing crop yields, making it a vital resource for Kenyan farmers. The fertiliser will be distributed through the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots and sub-depots nationwide at affordable rates, ensuring that it reaches farmers in need.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi assured the nation that there will be an ample supply of subsidised fertiliser for the upcoming planting season, stating, “We are committed to ensuring that every farmer has access to affordable fertiliser to support their agricultural activities.”
This donation from Algeria is expected to help Kenya achieve its target of distributing 7 million bags of fertiliser to farmers for the 2024 long and short rains seasons, marking a significant step towards enhancing food security and agricultural sustainability in the country.
The government of Algeria also highlighted the importance of the donation, with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune stating, “Africa is a priority for exports from fertilizer, a strategic product in high demand around the world.” This donation underscores the strong partnership between the two nations and their commitment to supporting agricultural development in Kenya.
