Kenyatta University Teaching Research and Referral Hospital (KUTRRH) has commenced offering breast reconstruction surgery to a select group of breast cancer survivors.

Addressing a gathering of medical professionals at an international symposium, Board Chairperson Prof Olive Mugenda revealed that the hospital plans to perform the procedure on at least 10 women, with operations set to begin this week.

Prof Mugenda emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “Breast reconstruction is not just cosmetic; it plays a vital role in the recovery process, empowering survivors to regain their confidence and quality of life.”

Highlighting the hospital’s commitment to cancer care, Prof Mugenda shared that KUTRRH has screened 82,000 cancer cases since 2020, with 2,500 diagnosed with stage 3 and 4 breast cancer.

She urged the government and medical insurers to support this endeavor, recognizing the importance of providing resources for post-surgery care.

Prof Mugenda also announced collaborations with medical experts from various countries, including Canada, the US, Argentina, Italy, and Ghana, to ensure the success of the reconstruction surgeries.
