The government has announced plans to reinstate the Linda Mama program, an initiative designed to provide expectant mothers with access to free delivery services.

Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni confirmed that the program will be integrated into the forthcoming Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) upon its rollout, reaffirming the government’s commitment to maternal healthcare.

Speaking on Tuesday, Muthoni stated, “I want to confirm that it is coming back bigger and better. We are a listening government, we are a listening ministry. When people tell us what they want, we package it together.” The government is allocating Sh2 billion to enhance the Linda Mama program, which originally began in 2013 to provide free maternity services in public healthcare facilities.

While the High Court declared the SHIF unconstitutional on July 12 due to concerns over public participation and disparities in contributions, Muthoni assured that existing structures would remain intact. “NHIF is extended until SHIF rolls out. It is the Social Health Authority that will decide which funds go to Linda Mama and what goes to SHIF,” she added.

This revival of the Linda Mama program is part of Kenya’s commitment to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, targeting a reduction in maternal and neonatal mortality rates. The initiative aims to bring healthcare services closer to mothers, ensuring safer deliveries and improved health outcomes.
