The Ministry of Health has embarked on a comprehensive process to amend the existing Tobacco Control Act, targeting the regulation of nicotine products in Kenya. Dr. George Githuka, from the Ministry’s drugs and substances control division, emphasized the urgency of these amendments during a stakeholders’ meeting in Nairobi.
Dr. Githuka stated, “We are focused on reviewing the Tobacco Control Act to address not only nicotine products but also anticipate future developments in the tobacco industry.” The Ministry’s initiative aims to enhance control measures concerning the production, sale, advertising, and consumption of tobacco products, particularly targeting emerging nicotine products like e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches.
The proposed amendments seek to fortify legislation to better govern the evolving tobacco landscape and safeguard public health standards. Dr. Githuka highlighted the need for collaboration with partners in tobacco control to effectively combat the detrimental effects of these products.
The World Health Organization has warned about the dangers posed by such emerging tobacco products, emphasizing that all forms of tobacco use are harmful. The Ministry’s efforts align with global health recommendations to mitigate the adverse impact of tobacco on individuals and society at large.
The overhaul of the Tobacco Control Act aims to address inadequacies, enhance tobacco control measures, and ensure the effective utilization of resources for research, cessation, and rehabilitation programs.
