The Ministry of Labour has vowed to address the concerns raised by aviation workers during recent protests regarding the government’s plan to lease Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Adani Group. Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua held a meeting with the workers on Wednesday, assuring them that their grievances will be met with transparency.

“We will provide all necessary information about the leasing deal,” CS Mutua stated, emphasizing that employees lacked a full understanding of the situation, which contributed to spreading rumors. He urged the workers to seek accurate information rather than relying on speculation.

Mutua further announced plans for a follow-up meeting with Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir next week to help resolve the ongoing tensions. “I listened closely to their grievances and appreciate the need for better communication from their employer,” he reiterated.

The protests, led by staff of the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), erupted just two days after they initially aimed to postpone a planned strike, allowing space for discussions. Acting Managing Director Henry Ogoye addressed the workers during the demonstrations, urging them to submit memoranda with their concerns.

The Ministry’s response follows President William Ruto’s intervention, who met with union leaders to find a resolution. “We are committed to ensuring that any public-private agreements respect workers’ rights and employment terms,” Mutua assured, promising prompt action on the matter.
