The national government has begun the process of transferring eight museums to county governments, indicating a substantial shift in cultural asset administration.

This transfer procedure is being led by the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGRTC) and Kenya’s National Museums.

According to IGRTC Vice Chairperson Saadia Kontoma, “We are dedicated to transferring duly verified assets to enhance the capacity of Wajir county in delivering services related to the devolved function.” This move underscores the importance of collaboration between different levels of government in driving socio-economic progress and ensuring effective governance at the grassroots level.

Angeline Hongo, an IGRTC Member, highlighted the establishment of an Intergovernmental Partnership Agreement (IPA) between the National Museums of Kenya, IGRTC, and Wajir County government. She stated, “The IPA will outline the details of the handover and the roles of the two levels of government in preserving our cultural heritage.”

This transfer of museum functions signals a new era of decentralized cultural preservation and community engagement.
