In a significant move to address the housing crisis faced by families displaced from riparian reserves in Nairobi, President William Ruto announced plans to construct 40,000 affordable housing units. The announcement was made during his visit to Kibra, where he inspected ongoing housing projects.

“Here in Nairobi, we are soon announcing the construction of 40,000 units to help settle those who were displaced by the government from flood risk areas,” Ruto declared, addressing concerns that the affected citizens would not benefit from the housing initiatives.

This proclamation follows growing criticism captured in media reports highlighting the struggles of victims who have faced weeks of neglect after government-led demolitions. Many, including elderly residents, conveyed their frustration, with Wanjiru Kirangu stating, “Ruto should know that Mathare people are also humans. Why should we sleep out as animals?”

Despite the outcry, Ruto asserted that the government had provided a Ksh10,000 incentive to support relocation efforts, arguing, “We will give them a settlement just as we had given them an incentive.”

In addition to the 40,000 units, Ruto announced the construction of an additional 15,000 units in Kibra within 90 days. He also highlighted that the projects would create employment for 15,000 youths, enhancing job opportunities in the area.

Ruto concluded by noting that a total of 110,000 housing units are presently under construction across the country, promising broader benefits from the affordable housing initiative.
