In a significant leadership change within the National Police Service, President William Ruto has appointed Douglas Kanja as the new Inspector General of Police, effective immediately.
This appointment comes after Kanja received approval from both the National Assembly and the Senate on Wednesday.
“I, William Ruto, appoint Douglas Kanja Kirocho to be the Inspector General of the National Police Service for a term of four years,” cites a gazette notice released by the office of the President.
Kanja steps into this role following the resignation of his predecessor, Japhet Koome, in July. Prior to his official appointment, Kanja served as the Acting Inspector General, showcasing his leadership in the police force during a transitional period.
With a career spanning significant roles, Kanja was the immediate former Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police. His extensive experience is expected to contribute positively to the ongoing reform agenda within the police service.
As part of this reshuffle, Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police, Gilbert Masengeli, was appointed as Acting Inspector General following Koome’s departure. The appointment of Kanja signals a commitment to strengthening the leadership within the National Police Service as the nation navigates complex security challenges.
Kanja’s leadership is anticipated to bring a fresh perspective to policing in Kenya, aiming to enhance security and public trust in law enforcement.
