Professor Patrick Verkooijen has been named the next Chancellor of the University of Nairobi by President William Ruto. Prof Verkooijen will hold his new position for the next five years.

President Ruto stated, “I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Patrick V. Verkooijen (Prof.) to be the Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, for five years, with effect from the 12th January 2024,” as per a gazette notice.

Taking over from Professor Amukowa Anangwe, who has been serving as Acting Chancellor, Prof Verkooijen brings a wealth of experience to the role. Prior to this appointment, he held the esteemed position of Distinguished Chair of The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies at the University of Nairobi.

Speaking on his new role, Prof Verkooijen expressed, “I am honored to be entrusted with the position of Chancellor at the University of Nairobi. I am committed to furthering the institution’s mission of academic excellence and contributing to its growth and development.”

With a notable background in advocating for climate change and a solid educational foundation that includes an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Nairobi, Professor Verkooijen’s appointment highlights his commitment to global climate action and the development of impactful initiatives.
