President William Ruto announced intentions to transfer the Eldoret Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) training camp to Kerio Valley as part of a long-term strategy to address the region’s banditry and instability. President Ruto stated at a church service on Sunday 14th January 2024 in Iten Elgeyo Marakwet, “I want to assure the people of Kerio Valley, from Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, and Samburu to Turkana, that they are going to enjoy peace.”
The President also revealed plans to establish two new sub-counties, Kerio Valley and Kolowa, and issued a stern ultimatum for their operationalization within ninety days. These measures come in response to the escalating cases of cattle rustling and banditry in the region, which have tragically resulted in loss of life. President Ruto reassured the public, stating, “I am asking those who are in possession of illegal arms to surrender them to the government or face the consequences.”
The decision to relocate the KDF training camp and create new sub-counties aims to intensify security measures and bring an end to the rampant banditry incidents. President Ruto also hinted at further steps, indicating that the government is planning to establish a permanent military camp in the region.
