In a show of support for Team Kenya, President William Ruto has awarded Ksh19.75 million to the nation’s Olympic medalists following their remarkable achievements at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Despite some criticism regarding the team’s performance, Kenya secured 11 medals—four gold, two silver, and five bronze—ranking 17th globally and topping the African continent.
During a spirited breakfast meeting at Eldoret State Lodge on August 15, President Ruto expressed pride in the athletes, stating, “You did not disappoint,” and added, “I am very proud this morning, almost emotional, that these sportsmen and women are making our country great.”
Leading the accolades was Beatrice Chebet, who received Ksh6 million for winning two gold medals in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters events. Faith Kipyegon, another star for Kenya, was awarded Ksh5 million for securing gold in the 1,500 meters and silver in the 5,000 meters.
Young athlete Emmanuel Wanyonyi, just 20 years old, was celebrated with Ksh3 million for becoming the youngest Olympic champion in the 800 meters. Silver medalist Ronald Kwemoi received Ksh2 million, while other medalists each received Ksh750,000.
The athletes are also entitled to daily allowances during training and competitions. President Ruto’s significant rewards serve as a powerful response to critics and reflect his ongoing commitment to supporting Kenyan sports.
