President William Ruto has issued a compelling call to Members of Parliament, urging them to expedite the passing of the crucial Housing Bill in Parliament to address the pressing issue of unemployment in Kenya. Ruto emphasized the urgency of the situation, highlighting the impact on job-seeking Kenyans awaiting the Bill’s approval.

In a stern message delivered on Friday, 16th February 2024 in Nyeri Town, Ruto urged MPs to act promptly on the Housing Bill, warning them of the consequences of further delays. “The Housing Bill that the court-mandated us to pass is before Parliament. We want it finalized by Tuesday so that many youths can secure employment. MPs should pass the Bill early in the morning and avoid unnecessary delays,” Ruto emphasized.

The proposed legislation, championed by Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, aims to establish the Affordable Housing Fund and uphold the constitutional right to accessible housing. Notably, the joint committees on Finance and Housing have recommended the removal of a clause requiring a 10% deposit, responding to stakeholders’ concerns.
