Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has announced an ambitious plan to increase Kenya’s diaspora remittances from Ksh671 billion to Ksh1 trillion by 2027.
Speaking at the Western Kenya Edition of the Diaspora Job Fair held at Mbale High School in Vihiga County on August 29, Mudavadi outlined this goal as part of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s broader strategy to create job opportunities for Kenyans amid increasing local unemployment.
“We want to push the remittances to a trillion by 2027. This is possible because Kenyans in foreign countries are increasing through our government’s intervention and bilateral agreements,” he stated.
Mudavadi highlighted that diaspora remittances have now surpassed traditional foreign capital sources, making them the largest single contributor to Kenya’s economy. He urged Kenyans working abroad to uphold discipline and maintain a positive representation of Kenya in their host countries.
“The demand for Kenyan talent is high globally due to our workforce’s strong work ethic,” he noted, emphasizing the critical role that foreign job opportunities play in boosting the country’s foreign revenue.
While addressing concerns raised about weak government policies and issues of double taxation affecting remittance flows, Mudavadi reassured participants that the Kenya Kwanza Government is also committed to creating local job opportunities.
He revealed that Israel has shown interest in investing in Kenya’s agricultural sector, a move that could further enhance employment prospects in the country.
