In a move to bolster local governance and combat corruption, President William Ruto has granted chiefs increased authority as part of the upcoming Climate Worx Mtaani Initiative.
Speaking to chiefs at the Kenya School of Government on Tuesday, Ruto stated, “We want to have a localized program. It’s crucial that we ensure employment opportunities reach the youth in their own communities.”
As part of their expanded roles, chiefs will oversee the hiring process for the initiative, ensuring that selected youth are from the local area.
“We aim to avoid situations where multiple youths from the same family receive jobs,” Ruto added, emphasizing the initiative’s commitment to community inclusion.
Moreover, Ruto has entrusted chiefs with the responsibility to combat local corruption. “Chiefs, I need you to be my eyes. If you spot bribery, reach out to me. Corruption is killing us,” he urged.
In a significant expansion of their powers, chiefs will also be authorized to enforce the law and make arrests in situations where police presence is lacking.
The first phase of the Climate Worx project will launch in Nairobi on October 1, deploying 20,000 youth to plant trees and develop sustainable urban areas.
The government plans to assess the program’s effectiveness in Nairobi before rolling out the second phase in other major cities. Ruto’s initiative marks a departure from the previous Kazi Mtaani program, signaling a shift in government strategy for youth employment and environmental sustainability.
