During his national visit to the Western, the President visited the site of several TVETs and training institutes either complete or under construction and rehabilitation. He assessed the ongoing construction of the Kenya School of TVET Ebunangwe. In Kopsiro, Bungoma County the President inspected the ongoing construction of the Chepkurkur Technical Training Institute an educational facility whose primary subject of focus will be smart agriculture.
Speaking in Mt. Elgon during the inspection of the Chepkurkur Training Institute, the President said that the setting up of a technical training institute in Mt Elgon will impart necessary skills to thousands of our youth to engage meaningfully in the building of our country. The practical knowledge gained particularly on agriculture will add value and help us explore fully the region’s huge farming potential.
The government is also in the process of hiring more than 2,000 TVET teachers and tutors to educate and aid in the streamlining of the curriculum as well as broaden the practical and technical skills for the young people of Kenya. This will ensure that the labour market in the country is filled with skilled and motivated youth.
Speaking in Nyeri a few weeks back, the President also stated that the government has increased funding to the tertiary education institutions from 5 Billion to 10 Billion. The government together with the Ministry of Education unveiled a funding method for the students with the Cabinet recently removing the requirement to have an ID to receive this funding as student. The increase in funding the schools will go a long way to improving the quality of education.
At the grassroots, the President has promised to ensure more technical institutes are constructed all over the country.
Hiring more tutors and teachers, increasing funding to TVETs, constructing more schools and rehabilitating the current institutions to meet the standards is the government’s way of reforming and bettering the education sector in the country. Reducing the challenges that schools encounter where there is lack of funding is keeping the promise the Kenya Kwanza government made to provide better and quality education to all Kenyans.
