Thika Level 5 Hospital is set to revolutionize cancer treatment services with the acquisition of a vital biosafety cabinet designed for the safe preparation of chemotherapy. This advanced equipment, now available in the hospital’s diagnostic wing, will protect healthcare workers and the environment from hazardous chemotherapy drugs, significantly minimizing exposure risks.

Hospital superintendent Dr. Patrick Nyaga stated, “This new machine will greatly enhance the quality of cancer care in our region.” He emphasized that it will make treatment more accessible, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for chemotherapy. “With the introduction of this new machine, we now have the opportunity to save many lives through timely treatment.”

Thika is experiencing a rise in cancer cases, yet many patients remain unaware of their conditions or seek screening too late. Dr. Nyaga urged local residents to take advantage of the new facility for regular screenings, stating, “Early detection through routine screenings allows medical professionals to implement treatment plans promptly, preventing the disease from advancing.”

Kenya reported 44,726 new cancer cases in 2022, with prevalent types including breast, cervical, and prostate cancers. Dr. Nyaga called for increased government funding to enhance screening facilities, highlighting the economic repercussions of cancer.

The Ministry of Health has prioritized the affordability of cancer care, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on patients and their families.
