The government has unveiled plans to set up treatment and rehabilitation centers for drug addicts in all 47 counties. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki announced the initiative, emphasizing the importance of addressing the supply and demand of illicit substances.
Speaking in Mombasa, Kindiki stated, “The war on illicit alcohol, narcotic drugs, and psychotropic substances entails the complete suppression of both the supply and demand. To suppress demand, treatment, rehabilitation, and reintegration of addicts remains a key objective of the government.”
The facilities, to be funded by the national government in partnership with county governments, will provide vital services to combat drug and alcohol abuse. Kindiki highlighted the comprehensive approach of the centers, which will offer training in technical skills and support recovered patients in starting their own businesses.
The move comes as a response to the growing concern over substance abuse in the country. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua expressed his support for the initiative, stating, “To address the menace of illicit brew and substance abuse in our nation, we must all pull together in one direction to save our generation from perishing.”
