The government has issued a ban on all artisanal mining activities and unlicensed commercial mining in Migori County. Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki announced this directive following a security review meeting in Migori town, emphasizing the need to prioritize public safety and environmental standards.
Prof. Kindiki stated, “To ensure regularized artisanal mining that meets public safety and environmental standards, the Government has banned all artisanal mining activities as well as unlicensed commercial mining.”
The decision comes in response to the alarming public safety risks posed by illegal artisanal mining sites in Migori County, which have tragically led to recent fatalities. Prof. Kindiki highlighted the need for immediate enforcement of the directive by the Migori County Security and Intelligence Committee (CSIC) to prevent further loss of life.
