CS Mutua Meets Tourism Sector Stakeholders

The CS to the Ministry of Tourism, Hon. Mutua has met with the e Kenya Association of Tour Operators, where they aired their grievances. Dr. Mutua is in the process of having engagements with all the key stakeholders in the tourism sector.

The challenges shared such as the park fees, e-visa challenges, destination marketing and more are challenges that have continued to deter the growth, expansion and profitability of the tourism sector.

The CS made a pledge to involve the organizations necessary to solve about 12 issues which KATO shared with him.

Challenges such as destination marketing are a personal project to Hon. Mutua who has expressed the need for the country to diversify the marketing of tourism. At the moment, there is much focus on just wildlife destinations which boxes the country. Kenya is culturally and scenic rich county with much more to offer to the international and domestic tourists.

Earlier this week, Hon. Mutua also had a fruitful engagement with the members of the Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association (KWCA).  With about 68% of the country’s wildlife residing outside of the protected areas, conservancies are the main artery of our conservation efforts.

The ministry tasked KWF to present a pragmatic proposal on how various ecosystems can qualify and benefit from carbon credits.

These initiatives have great potential to significantly improve the lives of the communities around wildlife, thereby reducing human wildlife conflict and making Kenya a preferred shopping and tourism hub for Africans.

Hon. Mutua has also visited the Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI) in Naivasha with a view to commissioning a number of innovative projects and structures. The projects, funded by the Tourism Promotion Fund, and amounting to 95 million Kenya shillings, are designed to support and strengthen the institute’s research capabilities.

At the tail end of the ongoing engagements with stakeholders in the tourism sector, Hon. Mutua intends to bring them all under one roof to crystalize the issues discussed and way forward.
