The Port of Mombasa welcomed the arrival of the cruise liner SH Diana, carrying 57 passengers and 109 crew members, signaling positive growth for the tourism industry during the upcoming festive season.

The tourism sector, hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and global economic challenges in recent years, is showing signs of recovery and resurgence.

Speaking during the cruise’s stopover at the Port of Mombasa, Bernard Osero, Head of Corporate Communication at the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), expressed optimism about the increasing appeal of Kenya as a cruise destination, which is expected to boost the tourism sector.

Osero noted that Kenya is regaining its status as a top tourist destination and a key player in the region. He anticipates more cruise vessels visiting the Port of Mombasa in the coming months, underscoring the global confidence in the port as a premier destination on the continent.

Additionally, Osero mentioned plans to transform the Port of Mombasa into a home port for cruise vessels, emphasizing that the port now offers world-class cruise reception facilities, aligned with international standards.

In a positive development, a ship recently docked at the Port of Lamu, demonstrating the potential for the port’s commercial growth. Captain Ali Abdile, Head of Pilotage at KPA, highlighted the significance of utilizing the Lamu anchorage for the benefit of both the country and the region. The warm reception by local authorities at Lamu Port underscores the importance of its strategic role in enhancing maritime activities.

The thriving cruise ship industry in Kenya, along with the expansion of infrastructure at both Mombasa and Lamu ports, paints a promising picture for the nation’s tourism prospects.
