The national Anti-FGM campaign, that seeks to create a society free from female genital mutilation, received a major boost after forty converted perpetrators of the vice in Bungoma County surrendered their tools and instruments to the government.

Secretary Gender Josephine Obonyo who graced the occasion urged the converts to keep their commitment going forward and explore the various forms of government support available.

The County government of Bungoma together with the national government promised to initiate alternative economic empowerment programs to assist them.

“Any practice that violates individual rights should be highly discouraged. Cultural and community leaders have a leading role to play towards the elimination of harmful practices, including cultural norms that threaten the most fundamental right to life”, said statement recently issued by the State Department of Gender.

Men End FGM, an organization in the fight against FGM has echoed the Ministry of Gender’s campaign to end FGM by reiterating the need to involve men/boys in the solution and fight against FGM, engaging them to adopt equitable attitudes and behaviors towards women/girls.

The event was attended by local leaders, community and cultural representatives- the Sabaot Council of Elders and donor partners’ representatives.
