When the doctor tells you that your child might have a physical or developmental disability, as a parent, the first step is to panic about their health and education. Many parents like me will tell you how much you wonder whether there are schools nearby that can cater to your child’s needs.

Equipment such as assistive devices are expensive, medication, and more, will take a toll on you. So, the worry that schools might be another added expense is a constant issue a parent will face.

However, this government seems to have taken the matters of accessible education for all quite seriously. Many of us parents have had little worry as nowadays, many public schools like Gicharani Primary School here in Kikuyu, have a special needs sections. Kids with learning disabilities in this school are given the specialized care they need.

The curriculum of this country is also friendly to children with special needs. Focusing on the comprehension and competency of children allows many of our children with special needs a level playing field. With more money being allocated to schools in the country, more of our kids are able to get a quality education.

There is of course a need to increase teachers and tutors of special needs in public schools so that more parents especially in the villages can bring in their special needs to school. With more teachers, parents will be less worried about their child getting the care they deserve while away from home.
