In a proactive step towards preserving cultural heritage and empowering local communities, the State Department for Culture and Heritage, under the leadership of Umi PS Bashir, has reaffirmed the government’s dedication to safeguarding Kenya’s diverse cultural legacy.

Recognizing the intrinsic value of culture in shaping societal identity, PS Bashir emphasized the critical need to protect and uphold traditional customs and practices.

During a recent visit to the Garissa Cultural Centre, PS Bashir raised concerns about the potential threats posed by modern technologies such as digitization and social media to the preservation of cultural heritage. Stressing the urgency of addressing these challenges, PS Bashir underscored the importance of taking proactive measures to ensure the continuity of cultural traditions.

Garissa’s inclusion in the Ushanga Kenya Initiative marks a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to support cultural preservation and community empowerment. The initiative, which focuses on providing capacity building, training, and enhanced market access for women and girls, aims to equip local artisans with the skills and resources needed to produce high-quality traditional bead products and access both local and international markets.

MP Dekow Mohamed commended the rich cultural heritage of the Somali community and urged the ministry to harness the untapped potential of women and youth in preserving and promoting cultural practices. The presence of county officials and community leaders at the event demonstrated a unified commitment to preserving cultural heritage and fostering empowerment initiatives for future generations in Kenya.
