President William Ruto has today Thursday, February 1, 2024 called out the management of Nzoia Sugar Company for the financial struggles faced by the miller.
President Ruto stated, “I shall sit down with your leaders until we get the correct formula because most privatised companies can pay their farmers and workers meaning the main problem is with the poor management and not sugar cane farming.”
This comes after the President’s previous remarks, where he vowed to implement leadership changes to revitalize the ailing cane miller.
During a speech in Kanduyi, Bungoma county, on August 28, 2023, Ruto expressed his frustration, saying, “It was unacceptable that the miller has an accrued debt of Sh53 billion despite various bailout plans while private millers were doing well.”
He emphasized the need for effective solutions, stating, “This time round we must get it right. We can’t play another poker game here of bringing Kenyans’ money and it gets lost.” The government is currently working on privatizing struggling cane millers with the aim of making them profitable.
