Aisha Jumwa had the privilege to join H.E the First Lady of the Republic of Kenya Mama Rachel Ruto during a high level interactive session on “The role of women in energy transition for a sustainable future in Africa.” At the recently concluded Africa Climate Summit.

That there is nothing about African women without African women. We must improve women’s representation at all levels of clean energy sector.

To be just, the energy transition must include and empower women.

According to a study done by the UNDP in the year 2022, energy transition must be just, done in a way that delivers sustainable energy access for all and must be done with women. The clean energy sector must do more to identify and address the barriers preventing women from entering and thriving in the sector.

To be just and effective, the energy transition must be done with all parts of society – including with women, and in a way that addresses women’s needs and preferences. Women need to be included as agents of change not only as beneficiaries

Hon. Aisha Jumwa highlighted the various way climate change affects women, bringing to light the need for women be seen key players in Africa’s energy transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future. Their involvement goes beyond protecting the environment; it also promotes social and economic justice.

The Government of Kenya is committed to clean and sustainable energy and has prioritized availability of clean, safe, environmental-friendly, and affordable cooking, lighting, and heating fuels. This is being implemented through facilitative policies and programs. Kenya and the whole African continent has abundant renewable energy sources and unused arable land as opportunities to lead the transition to clean energy and sustainable agriculture.

All stakeholders to work together to ensure that women are at the forefront of green growth and sustainable development.
