Dr. Mutua, CS to the Ministry of Tourism earlier today led the annual World Wildlife Day celebrations at Shimba Hills National Reserve in Kwale County.

Addressing the attendees, the CS emphasized the importance of collective and individual efforts in preserving Kenya’s rich wildlife, highlighting its intrinsic value, economic benefits, and role in the country’s identity.

The theme for this year’s World Wildlife Day is “Connecting People and the Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation,” stressing the urgency of safeguarding biodiversity and raising awareness about wildlife’s role in maintaining a balanced ecosystem.

The CS highlighted recent collaboration with the private sector in translocating 21 rhinos to the Loisaba Conservancy, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts for optimal wildlife conservation. Kenya is home to an impressive natural heritage, boasting over 25,000 species of wild animals and 7,000 species of plants, making it one of Africa’s most biodiverse countries.

He also addressed the critical issue of compensating victims affected by human-wildlife conflicts, emphasizing the importance of providing support to those impacted. CS Mutua acknowledged the need for fencing around parks and conservancies to mitigate these conflicts and ensure the safety of both wildlife and communities.

Dr. Mutua spoke of the importance of enhancing safety measures along the beaches in Malindi. Together with the county leadership, this will be done through improved lighting infrastructure.

The CS also called for the construction of a world-class Aquarium in Mombasa to promote marine conservation efforts and attract tourists.

In summary, CS Mutua emphasized on the need to ensure that all Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) airstrips are fully operational and well-maintained to facilitate efficient wildlife management and tourism activities across the country.

President Ruto’s government’s long-term conservation strategy involves sustained collaboration with communities, conservation partners, and stakeholders in the tourism industry.
