The State Department of Livestock PS, Jonathan Mueke has underscored the government’s need to fast-track the operationalization of the Kenya Leather Industrial Park in Kenanie, Machakos County.

The PS said that the operationalization of this park will be crucial for revitalizing the leather sector in the country.

Earlier today, the PS held a meeting with the PS Interior, PS Roads, PS Energy, and representatives from the State Departments for Water and ICT, who are key enablers of the development of the leather park in different capacities.

The meeting aimed to collectively think and strategize the speedy operationalization of this facility.

Currently, the country slaughters 3 million cattle annually, but over 50% of the hides go to waste.

The government plans to utilize all these hides and skins and process them into ready leather products for local and export markets.

This process will be essential in the creation of employment opportunities, especially for the Kenyan youth, a cause that is close to the President’s vision for the country. This will be a significant contributor to the country’s GDP and economic growth.

The government is keen to reform and monetize all the sub-sectors of the agricultural sector as Agriculture remains a major pillar of the BETA Plan.
