Health CS Susan Nakhumicha has revealed that Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) successfully completed an impressive 374 open heart surgeries within a span of six months, from July 2023 to January 31, 2024. The Health CS presented this achievement in a report to the Departmental Committee on Health, highlighting a total of 677 cardiothoracic surgeries conducted by KNH during the same period.

Nakhumicha also highlighted other significant medical procedures carried out at KNH, including 11 kidney transplants and 2,424 minimally invasive surgeries. She emphasized, “The hospital provided specialized burns treatment to 277 individuals and delivered 14,895 oncology sessions to patients in need.”

Furthermore, the CS revealed that KNH engaged in 184 multidisciplinary outreaches with various counties. Additionally, Mwai Kibaki Hospital and Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital performed 538 and 26 minimally invasive surgeries, respectively.

The report also showcased the impressive medical services provided by Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), which included 49 open heart surgeries, 2,272 minimally invasive surgeries, and various other critical treatments. Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital also made significant contributions to healthcare, conducting 11 open heart surgeries, 1,450 minimally invasive surgeries, and providing essential chemo and radiotherapy treatments.

CS Nakhumicha expressed the State Department for Medical Services’ unwavering commitment to collaborating with Parliament and other stakeholders to ensure the delivery of high-quality, accessible, and affordable healthcare services to the people of Kenya. She emphasized the importance of a healthy population in driving economic growth and urged for continued support to enhance healthcare provision in the country.
