Community Health Promoters are playing a vital role in the Kenya Kwanza government’s push for universal health coverage. The CHPs, who are delivering primary healthcare services to local communities, with a focus on preventive and promotive health measures, have they become integral to the country’s healthcare strategy.

H.E. President Ruto launched the CHPs program in October 20, 2023, in Kericho County. Since then, the Community Health Promoters Program has achieved significant milestones in community health service delivery.

Mary Muthoni, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, highlights that CHPs in 31 counties are utilizing digital tools, reaching 15 million Kenyans with essential health services.

Over 3 million households have been visited, with 1.7 million individuals screened for blood pressure and 1.3 million for blood sugar. Notably, 85,000 have been referred for facility-based healthcare due to high blood pressure and blood sugar, while 1.3 million children under 5 have received assessments.

The Kenya Kwanza government recognizes the vital role CHPs play and has allocated substantial resources, including over KES 3 billion annually for stipend payments to support 107,000 CHPs nationwide.

Additionally, equipped with comprehensive kits containing medicines and supplies, CHPs are better prepared to deliver essential services effectively, contributing to improved healthcare access across the country.
