In the wake of a relentless cholera outbreak that had gripped the nation since October 2022, the Ministry of Health embarked on a heroic mission to combat the disease. Their unwavering determination and comprehensive approach have borne fruit, with recent data as of 18th July 2023 revealing remarkable progress in the battle against cholera.

As of the aforementioned date, the country had grappled with a staggering 11,181 cholera cases and suffered 196 fatalities across 26 counties. This alarming situation underscored the urgency of immediate action. The Case Fatality Rate (CFR) stood at a troubling 1.7%, emphasizing the gravity of the crisis.

However, the tide began to turn with the initiation of the Oral Cholera Vaccination (OCV) campaign. The first round, executed in February 2023, saw 2.2 million individuals aged one and above vaccinated in Nairobi, Garissa, Tana River, and Wajir. This great effort resulted in a significant reduction in cholera cases in these areas, a testament to the effectiveness of vaccination as a preventive measure.

Building on the momentum generated by the first campaign, the International Coordinating Group (ICG) stepped in, providing the Ministry of Health with 1,533,199 doses of the Oral Cholera Vaccine for the second phase of the campaign, which commenced on 3rd August 2023. This time, the vaccination drive focused on the eight most-affected counties, including Homa Bay (Suba South), Kajiado (Kajiado East), Marsabit (Moyale), Nairobi (Kamukunji and Embakasi Central), Wajir (Wajir North), Mandera (Mandera East), Machakos, and Garissa.

The results of the second campaign have been nothing short of spectacular. Over 1.6 million individuals were successfully vaccinated across the eight targeted counties. This strategic approach ensured maximum impact, reducing the cholera burden significantly in some of the worst-affected regions.

Buoyed by these accomplishments, the Ministry of Health is gearing up for future battles against cholera. Plans are already in motion for preventive Oral Cholera Vaccine campaigns in 2024, ensuring that the nation remains vigilant in the fight against this deadly disease.

Moreover, the ministry has set its sights on an ambitious goal – the National Multisectoral Cholera Elimination Plan by 2030. This comprehensive plan envisions a cholera-free nation within the decade, highlighting the government’s commitment to the health and well-being of its citizens.

The Ministry of Health has displayed exceptional dedication and resolve, turning the tide against cholera and paving  way for a healthier and more prosperous nation. This success story serves as a ray of hope, demonstrating that with concerted efforts, even the most formidable challenges can be overcome.
