President William Ruto, alongside Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Governor Godhana Dhadho, today Saturday 4th November 2023 inaugurated the revitalization and expansion of the Bura Irrigation and Settlement Scheme in Tana River County.

This landmark project is set to have a profound impact on Kenya, aligning with the President’s visionary manifesto for agriculture and energy supply.

Irrigation plays a pivotal role in Kenya’s quest for food security, and the Bura scheme’s rehabilitation and expansion will significantly contribute to this goal. The project will more than double the land under irrigation, from 12,000 to 25,000 acres, resulting in a substantial increase in agricultural production.

An estimated 950,000 bags of rice and 500,000 bag 950,000 bags of rice and 500,000 bags of maize will be produced annually, bolstering food supplies for Kenyans.

Moreover, this expansion will not only fortify food security but also stimulate economic growth. Over 120,000 jobs will be created, providing employment opportunities and driving the local economy. The financial benefits are substantial, with an expected annual boost of Sh5 billion.

In addition to the irrigation project, the inspection of the 26-kilometer main canal, already over half complete, is a testament to the commitment to innovative, cost-effective solutions.

The new gravity-fed system will bring annual savings of Sh120 million, aligning perfectly with President Ruto’s commitment to efficient energy supply and resource management.
