In a move aimed at alleviating the economic challenges faced by Kenyan taxpayers, President William Ruto’s administration has spearheaded the waiver of Ksh209 billion in penalties and interests through the Tax Amnesty Program.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) announced this decision, providing relief to over 227,000 taxpayers who applied for the program to seek respite from accrued penalties up to December 31, 2022.

Taxpayers were required to pay only the principal tax amounting to Ksh14.5 billion by June 30, 2024, to benefit from the program. The Tax Amnesty Program, introduced in the Finance Act of 2023, aims to provide a lifeline to struggling taxpayers and encourage compliance with tax obligations.

KRA has urged taxpayers with outstanding taxes to seize the opportunity provided by the program to ease their financial burdens.
