State Agencies Join Hands to Actualize 15B Trees Target

The Principal Secretary for the State Department of Forestry Mr. Gitonga Mugambi on Monday morning hosted his Correctional Services counterpart Ms. Salome Beacco at the Ministry headquarters to discuss the 15bn national tree growing and ecosystem restoration program.

The 15 Billion Trees campaign was launched by H.E President Ruto, a program that is aimed at restoring the country’s forests and rangelands for the purpose of protecting water catchment areas, mitigate drought and famine brought about by deforestation as well as flooding.

The restoration of forests in the country is also aimed at helping reverse and slow down the effects of climate change.

PS Mugambi acknowledged the efforts undertaken by the State Department for Correctional Services in seedling propagation, advising the team to accelerate the process so as to meet its annual target of 100 million seedlings.

On her part, PS Beacco assured the Ministry of her support in scaling up seedling propagation. State Department for Correctional Services is among 12 Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) identified for propagation of adequate seedlings for the tree growing initiative. This initiative can only be a success through partnerships of the government, various government agencies and the people.

During the incoming short rains, is a perfect opportunity for Kenyans to take up the challenge by H.E President Ruto where he urged Kenyans to ensure they plant at least 30 trees each year.
