A year ago, the President made a plea to all of us a country to take matters into our own hands and participate in preserving our own country. We have all seen the devastation illegal logging has done to our forests.

As a country, we are all heavily reliant on forests. Many of us have fond memories of sitting by the fire in our grandmother’s kitchen roasting maize and listening to her stories. Many of us have been housed and fed by the forests. In every town and village, all Kenyans know a carpenter or a fundi whose children and families rely on forests for survival.

With the cutting down of trees in the past, many water catchment areas and river and streams have been degraded and lost which has led to our relatives in these areas without access to clean water.

Taking up the challenge to plant more trees as our President asked in December of 2022 is the answer to this problem.

Together with churches like the ACK who has set aside 54 acres of land to plant and restore forests is the way to go.

We as Kenyans are the biggest beneficiaries of these trees. We graze our livestock in the forests, we build our houses and businesses from the forests. Without forests, we are in danger of droughts and famine and in the coming predicted El Nino, at even higher risks of floods and drownings.

This is a call to emulate the ACK church and the President to plant as many trees, be it fruits or fodder. Let’s join hands in restoring our country into a green country.
