Last evening, Dr. Mutua CS to the Ministry of Tourism, attended this year’s Italian Cuisine Festival, part of the Week of the Italian Cuisine in the World, held in Malindi, Kenya at the Kilili Baharini Resort. He was attending as the chief guest.

This event, in collaboration with the Italian trade agency, aligns with Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ endeavor to promote Italian food and wine as integral components of Italian identity and culture.

The CS presented plans to rejuvenate Malindi into a leading tourist destination, employing a multifaceted strategy to attract both visitors and investors.

“The revival of Malindi transcends tourism; it aims to foster a sustainable, vibrant community by creating job opportunities, in line with Kenya Kwanza’s bottom-up approach, especially focusing on empowering our young people,” – stated Dr. Mutua.

Tourism in Malindi has faced challenges in the past few years mainly due to the departure of major foreign investors, especially of Italian origin.

CS Mutua stated that his commitment lies in reigniting Malindi’s historical ties to Italian tourism. The Ministry has ongoing negotiations aimed at enticing Italian investors back to this coastal gem by fostering partnerships and showcasing its untapped potential. The Ministry of Tourism aims to revitalize Malindi’s economy and tourism sector.

The Ministry is working on enhancing safety measures in Malindi, including collaborating with local law enforcement, implementing advanced surveillance systems, and engaging the community to ensure a secure environment. Plans are underway to establish new police stations for security.

Efforts are ongoing to improve flight connectivity between Jomo Kenyatta Airport and the coastal cities of Malindi and Watamu for smoother travel. The ministry’s strategy includes positioning Malindi and Watamu as Kenya’s premier entertainment towns.

The CS also urged the stakeholders in Malindi to intensify their marketing efforts. He also called on the establishments to ensure they have defibrillators onsite and at least two staff members trained in first aid for emergencies.

Also in attendance was H.E. Roberto Natali, the Italian Ambassador to Kenya, Hon. Owen Baya, Kilifi North M.P., Mr. Josephat Biwott, Kilifi County Commissioner, Fatuma Hadi, the Kilifi County Police Commander, alongside other embassy and ministry staff, and esteemed guests
