The Canadian government has pledged Ksh8.7 billion in funding to bolster Kenya’s deployment of officers to Haiti. This financial support aims to strengthen the peacekeeping mission and combat the rampant gang-based violence plaguing the region.

Foreign Minister Melanie Joly expressed Canada’s commitment to aiding Haiti, stating, “Canada’s support will pave the way for more meaningful interventions to protect the people of Haiti and restore peace and prosperity in the country.”

Furthermore, Canada has allocated a total of Ksh13.3 billion to assist Haiti in various peace initiatives, including Ksh543 million for an anti-corruption program and Ksh488 million for border security enhancements.

Despite legal challenges, President Ruto remains steadfast in his determination to continue the peacekeeping mission. In response to the support from Canada, President Ruto affirmed, “We are grateful for the generous assistance from our Canadian partners in our efforts to restore peace in Haiti.”

Haiti, reeling from the aftermath of President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination, is in dire need of humanitarian assistance, with 5.5 million people requiring urgent aid. The official agreement between Kenya and Haiti is expected to pave the way for the long-awaited deployment of Kenyan police authorities to the region.
