Transport cabinet secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has launched the standards of training certification and watchkeeping for seafarers courses at the Railway Training Institute(RTI) to facilitate quality management and safety of Kenya’s waterways.

The Cabinet secretary who presided over the event at the institution in Kisumu Friday stated that this step will be a milestone toward realizing a sustainable blue economy in the country, and will greatly promote regional integration and trade.

“The launch of the courses is a major milestone in our journey towards realizing a sustainable blue economy in the country and expanding its contribution to the national development,” stated the CS in his X account.

He further urged the Kenya Maritime Authority to certify all lake users and seafarers to ensure the safety of operations within Kenyan waters.

The CS also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) between Kenya Railways and Utalii College that will enable graduates to access job opportunities in the wider marine sector.

“I also witnessed the signing of an MoU between the Kenya Railways and Kenya Utalii College. This partnership will enable graduates to access job opportunities in the wider marine sector, including hospitality in the cruise ship industry,” the CS stated.
