ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo has vowed to reignite the basketball legacy in Nyanza, aiming to revive the region’s lost basketball glory. Speaking at the Eliud Owalo Nyanza Secondary Basketball Tournament in Maseno, Owalo expressed his commitment to rejuvenating the basketball scene in Nyanza, emphasizing the need to identify and nurture talented players.

Owalo lamented the decline of prominent teams like Lakers and Jua kali, which were once pillars of the national basketball squad. He urged tournament organizers to scout players for two Nyanza-based basketball teams, promising support for their development through the Eliud Owalo Foundation.

“As Eliud Owalo Foundation, we are ready to support the two teams which will be based in the region. We want to revive basketball in Nyanza,” Owalo affirmed, highlighting the importance of fostering young talent and providing opportunities for student-athletes in the region.

The tournament, sponsored by the Eliud Owalo Foundation, has attracted 26 schools from Nyanza, with plans for Kenya Sports Academy and Kenya Basketball Federation to identify promising players for future opportunities, including potential representation in the USA.

Owalo’s initiative aims to not only revive basketball in Nyanza but also to empower young athletes and promote fair competition among schools in the region. With a focus on talent development and integrity in sports, Owalo’s efforts seek to create a platform for showcasing skills and nurturing future basketball stars in Nyanza.
